Building a Smart Home Without Subscriptions
Every smart-home gadget now wants a monthly fee, which converts your light bulbs into a line item. After one too many 'your video history has expired' emails, I rebuilt the whole setup around gear that works locally.
The trick is to favour devices that speak open standards - Zigbee, Thread, plain old Wi-Fi - and a hub you control yourself. Setup takes a weekend of tinkering rather than ten minutes of tapping, but nothing nags you for a card afterwards.
Two years in, the only subscription left is the internet connection itself. The lights still turn on when the cloud has a bad day, which is more than the cloud-first setup could say.
